For those who remember, the website was launched in 2002, coded in HTML with a lot of hard work from Donald Roos and Robert Jan van Noort (Pankra) shortly after they graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague.

The website became popular among type design students and teachers. However, due to their design work, Donald and Robert Jan didn’t have time to keep Typebase up to date. In 2011, Donald discovered that the site was still being used, although the content was a little outdated. So, he started making plans for a total update and a redesign. Working during nights and weekends, it took several months to complete this mission. The new version was released at the end of April 2012, nearly ten years after its first release. Unfortunately, it was later closed down due to a lack of time.

After a couple years of back and forth conversations, in 2024, Donald and Marina Chaccur joined forces for a new version of Typebase, using Brandbook.io, one of Donald’s other projects, as a platform to facilitate the work.

Typebase is in beta phase.
We have compiled lists of type related links from around the world, divided into a few categories. There are more lists to come and a lot more links to be added, we know. Please bare with us, while the website is being “constructed”, as this is a voluntary labour of love, in the time between our other jobs and projects.

There are some guides we follow when we decide if we should add a site to the TypeBase lists. Please let us know if you think some sites didn’t match the selection or if you have any suggestions for the criteria/ selection.

• The content of the website is mainly dedicated to typefaces, type design and/ or typography.
• Type designer is someone whose profession is making typefaces. A type designer is not graphic designer that just made a single typeface for some project. A type foundry has a catalog of typefaces of one or more type designers.
• The content of the sites is provided by professionals and does not contain illegal or offensive content.
• Sites have their own domain or subdomain, and should also be visible and accessible on mobile devices.
• TypeBase doesn’t add sites that do not provide relevant or actual content, or sites that are long term under construction.

Nope, the list is organized alphabetically.
